Massacre in Benue: Yelwata Community Attacked in One of Nigeria’s Deadliest Raids
A devastating attack occurred in Yelwata community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, over the weekend of June 13–14, 2025. Armed men reportedly surrounded the village at night, locking residents inside their homes and setting them ablaze. According to various reports, between 100 and 200 people were killed, including women and children, while over 6,500 people were displaced and several homes, markets, and farms were destroyed. The attackers are suspected to be part of a heavily armed militia linked to longstanding herder–farmer conflicts that have plagued the region. Government officials, including Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and President Bola Tinubu, have condemned the attack.
